As humans, our deepest need is to be seen and validated. Yet, the paradox is that being fully seen is often what terrifies us the most. We yearn for connection and understanding, but we also fear the vulnerability that comes with exposing our true selves.
Parker Palmer eloquently captures this tension when he writes, “The human soul doesn’t want to be fixed, it simply wants to be seen and heard. The soul is like a wild animal—tough, resilient, and shy. When we go crashing through the woods shouting for it to come out so we can help it, the soul will stay in hiding. But if we are willing to sit quietly and wait for a while, the soul may show itself.”
In my experience, the best way to coax our true selves—or our souls—into the open isn’t by force or analysis, but through gentle, playful exploration. Over the past two years, I’ve been working on a fun and engaging exercise called the Soul Expression Map. This exercise invites you to dive into your inner world with a sense of curiosity and lightness, using abstraction exercises like identifying your spirit animal and your shadow animal, and answering other reflective questions.
The Soul Expression Map is more than just an exercise—it’s a tool for building intimacy with yourself and with others. It’s designed to be free, accessible, and, most importantly, enjoyable. I truly believe that when we approach self-discovery with a sense of play, our souls feel safe enough to come out of hiding and reveal their true nature.
I would love for you to try the Soul Expression Map and share your thoughts with me. Whether you’re on a journey of self-discovery, seeking deeper connections with others, or simply looking for a fun and meaningful way to reflect, I believe you’ll find value in this exercise.

Looking forward to your feedback!

P.S. At 53, I discovered my blind father wasn’t my biological father, and my world was turned upside down. After six years of reflection, my book BlindSighted, a journey of identity, faith, and healing, is finally ready to share. It will be released on October 8th, and I’d love for you to be among the first to experience it. You can order it here.
